Please Stand Up, Please Stand Up
September was Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, or as I call it, SPAM. I didn’t post anything in relation to that campaign in September, but I want to introduce you to a thought concerning that awareness right now, even though it’s October.
There should never be just one month set aside to highlight this campaign. It’s a daily battle. It’s a moment-by-moment battle for the ones whose thoughts are hyper-focused on killing themselves or hurting others in the process involved with fighting that battle.
Prevention is action. Prevention is taking risks and being willing to be uncomfortable in the name of action.
Every day I see people slowly killing themselves and hurting others and no one says a word to them. People interact with those visibly suffering like it’s normal. When the crap (sic) hits the fan, those same people are shocked at the smell of that crap and start placing blame. No one wants to step up and be a champion of action, prevention, or simply do what they know in their hearts is right.
Well, I’d like to introduce you to someone who is willing, Sam H. In paying homage to Eminem: “Would the real Sam H. please stand up.”
Suicide, addiction, & mental health is standing all around you. You’re surrounded by Sam H. These are the people slowly killing themselves a little bit every moment. Every moment you stand by and don’t do something, anything to stop advocating these behaviors, you’re a part of the problem.
Be the solution for someone, take action!
