The One in a Million Challenge

Mother’s Day was yesterday. It has me thinking of all the children today. Why do we not have a Kids Day? Talk about not getting any credit, there would be no day for moms and dads without kids.

I think about my kids constantly. They are no longer “kids”, so I shouldn’t call them that. They were 9 and 11 the last time I saw them. Makes it hard to picture them as anything else. I’ve been reflecting on how much kids suffer due to the choices adults make.

Take my kids for instance. They didn’t break any rules or cause any harm. Yet they are punished for my actions as well. It’s entirely my fault. I forced them to deal with a set of challenges no kid should struggle to deal with. Not society—me. I did that. I fully understand. That’s why this Challenge (keep reading below) will be in honor of them.

My kids are not alone in what they have been forced to overcome. There are over 2,000,000 (two million!) people in prison across America. How many kids does that leave to be cared for by others? What about all the kids out there whose parents are engulfed in drug addiction or alcoholism? How many kids are suffering from abuse right now? Maybe they are struggling with friends at school? Bullies? Parents going through a divorce? The challenges kids face can be endless.

Definitely a huge pat on the back to all the grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, and other care takers. You don’t have a Day either. Thank you for taking on that responsibility. On top of living your own life–it can’t be easy. Not part of your plan, was it? Yet you are still there to pick up the broken pieces left behind by people like me.

I’m sure you are doing an amazing job. My ex-wife has done a great job with our kids. Her husband has been there too. I won’t leave out my ex-mother-in-law and father-in-law either.

Regardless of the support kids have after a parent has left them, and facing endless other challenges, they still have a hard time, I’m sure. Those difficulties can leave them feeling alone and in pain. I’m not even a child, and when people reach out to me and let me know they are there, it helps!

One in a million sounds special, right? A “million to one” sounds like odds in Vegas. What if you could increase the chance of a kid finding their value? That being them–just the way they are–is worth more than a million of anything! Will you roll the dice? Come on, take a chance.

The One in a Million Challenge is born. I like the way one million sounds. It’s awe inspiring. I’ve never had one million of anything (especially money). They say money isn’t everything. Let’s prove that. One Million Messages of Love sent out into the world to find the kids who need it.

A small gesture to let them know they truly are One in a Million!

This challenge is simple…

1.) Share this with anyone and everyone possible;

2.) Think of an inspirational message or saying, or create any form of words that express love and understanding;

3.) Go to Facebook “The One in a Million Challenge” page, and post your message.

As an example, my own message is below.

This is my One in a Million.

Chase & Alexa, I love you both. I admire you for how you live your lives. I look up to you both in ways I can’t begin to explain with words. I’m proud of you both.  Here’s a throw-back you might remember–and a shout out to 7-11.  “When life serves you an ice cube, turn it into a slushy!”

Please share a link to badboymikesblog.com if you want. That would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

To collectively post One Million Messages of Love is a big ask. I used to always say to my kids “Go Big or Go Home”. I can’t go home, so I might as well go BIG!

1 down, 999,999 to go. I’ll keep going…

This is my One in a Million.

To all kids going through a bad time, you have no idea how much good is inside of you. That’s why you are going through what you are. This struggle will introduce you to the person you will become. Please don’t give up or think bad about yourself. You are exactly where you are meant to be. You’ll see. You’re strong. You are not alone. Once you get through this, there will be people who need you. They will need you to help them. You have been chosen for this. You are never alone.

999,998 to go. I bet we can do it…

Please Post your comments. They mean more than you can imagine.

Thanks for reading,

Mike

It was my concept for Bad Boy Mike's Blog so that those with little or no public voice or audience could Author public writings that the world could have access to. I also needed a platform for expressing my journey through 12+ years in the Ohio prison system. That has led to my development of a 2nd Chance Program for prisoners to "Do The Work" to actually and realistically prepare and change their lives for success in life after walls. It has become my passion. Many volunteers are behind the scenes helping with this project. Your support would be greatly appreciated if you too would like to help.

  1. “You matter
    Keep your life simple
    Talk out your issues with anyone that will listen
    The easy way gets harder…The harder ways get easier
    Pray the Serenity prayer
    Let go and let God”
